The Toyota MR2, seen here with mild mods, is an excellent choice for new enthusiasts. The shape has aged pretty well and the interior similarly, belies its 15 year vintage. Even with an old example you are unlikely to find much evidence of rust. Mechanically they are the most reliable Japanese performance car that you will find .
Available as a coupe or a T-bar roofed coupe, it is still possible to find clean and un modified examples but why not make the most of someone else’s passion and get yours ready loaded with mods! |

It is now more than 15 years since the MX5 was first revealed to world audiences. It was the car that got me started with Japanese cars and modification and I have the highest regard for the capabilities of the car.
With early 1.6 models in respectable shape now coming available for less than £3 000, there has never been a cheaper, more reliable way to turn on to open top motoring.
I prefer the later 1.8 models but all are a joy to drive and offer a myriad of modifying possibilities. |

The Mitsubishi FTO is the best kept secret amongst all of the Japanese imports. The looks tend to polarise opinion but for a nice, practical way of scaring yourself to death there are few cars that seem to cover the ground as quickly as this car does on the twisties.
Get the 2 litre GPX MIVEC engine in front of you and you have, with the suitable obligatory induction kit and a performance exhaust, the most satisfying engine note I have ever encountered. Push the throttle past 5 000 revs and listen to the banshees unleashed! Fantastic. |
